It was a typical sunny Saturday for Alexandra Waychoff and her family at their North Carolina ranch, unaware that their lives were about to change. As they busied themselves in the yard, a malnourished and friendly stray puppy unexpectedly darted into their driveway.

Recognizing her need for a permanent home, they took her to the vet, where they discovered she was a Carolina dog, a rare breed often found feral. Despite her rough condition, including worms and a healed ankle fracture, the family was moved to take her in after learning she had no microchip.
Receiving the Love She Always Needed
Naming her Leia in homage to Star Wars, the family began treating her ailments, and Leia responded with gratitude. She quickly became attached, especially to Waychoff, whose arms provided her with comfort and security.
The family’s connection deepened as they shared Leia’s journey on TikTok, encouraging others to embrace animal rescue. Leia’s gentle nature won over every family member, including Bo Brando the rescue cat, and dogs Stella and Capone.
Convinced that Leia’s arrival was fate, the Waychoffs officially adopted her on May 7th, 2024. Alexandra expressed on TikTok, “We bonded to her and feel that she was sent to us for a reason. We’ve decided to keep her and give her the best life we can, because her beautiful doggie soul deserves it.”
