In today’s world of mass-produced goods and artificial intelligence, finding personal, handcrafted items can feel rare and refreshing. But what if those handcrafted items were made by a cat? In a Chicago studio, Momo the cat is creating waves with his one-of-a-kind pottery, and people can’t seem to get enough of it!
Pawmade Pottery
Chicago-based potter Sophia Renata teaches pottery workshops and frequently incorporates cat designs into her work. But her pottery took a unique turn when her one-year-old cat, Momo, decided to lend a paw. What started as playful curiosity quickly turned Momo into a feline ceramics prodigy.
Momo’s technique involves Sophia shaping the overall clay vessel on the pottery wheel. Then, Momo jumps in to add his personal touch with his paws, playfully molding and shaping the vessel. At first, he pawed at the spinning wheel’s base, but soon Sophia began guiding him over the pot’s lip to help shape it further. His “tools” include his soft toe beans and claws, which create an artistic and rugged finish.
Momo also contributes by applying paw print-colored “slip,” a watered-down clay mixture, to the pottery’s exterior. Whether playing or genuinely crafting, his unique creations have become highly sought-after by fans.
Momo’s Pottery Classes
Handmade pottery is prized for its imperfections, showcasing its artisanal origin. With Momo’s unique touches, fans have flocked to purchase these pawmade pieces. While some may not understand the appeal, Momo and Sophia’s pottery consistently sells out due to its charm and one-of-a-kind design.
Momo’s influence doesn’t stop at his own work. He’s even given pottery lessons to his sister, June, who occasionally takes her turn at the wheel.
Momo Meowsterpieces
After honing his pottery skills, Momo continues to create his “meowsterpieces” regularly. His sister June sometimes joins him, though Momo seems to enjoy the process the most. After each pottery session, Momo gets a bath to wash off the non-toxic clay—unlike many cats, he doesn’t mind the water!
How Momo Discovered His Talent
Last summer, Sophia brought home her first potter’s wheel, and Momo’s fascination with the spinning clay began. Ever since, he’s been hooked. “I’m incredibly grateful for how many people are passionate about cats and pottery,” Sophia shared with The Dodo. “I love pottery, and to be able to do that with my cat is really special.”
What’s Next for Momo? Chef, Too?
As if mastering pottery wasn’t impressive enough, Momo is also learning his way around the kitchen! With his endless talents, Momo proves there’s no limit to a cat’s paw-tential.
