On Mother’s Day and throughout the year, we celebrate all the mothers who go to incredible lengths for their babies. This includes all the mama cats who give their all to care for their little ones! Every day, rescuers find these determined mothers out there, struggling against the odds to raise their kittens in harsh conditions.
And let’s not forget the rescuers and foster moms! You are true angels, providing safety and care for vulnerable mother cats and their babies when they need it most.
A Rare Ginger Mama Searches for Shelter
Recently, a struggling mama cat named Kate showed up at a home in Illinois. As a ginger tabby, she’s quite rare, since about 80% of ginger cats are males. But things were about to get even more extraordinary when she gave birth to her litter!
Kate delivered eight ginger kittens outside! Disaster could have struck at any moment. Fortunately, a Good Samaritan noticed her and set up a cardboard box, hoping she would take shelter so they could provide food and water. However, Kate had other ideas and didn’t find the box appealing. But where would she go next?
Mama cats are very selective when it comes to finding a safe place for their babies, but they can sometimes choose dangerous spots like an attic, a wall, a car engine, or even an airplane.
Rescuers and a Foster Mom to the Rescue!
Kate might have disappeared with her kittens, but that’s when rescuers from The Purrfect Cat Rescue Inc. stepped in. Thanks to caring people like Deb, also known as ‘shelter mommy,’ Kate and her babies were saved. Now, Kate has a loving foster home where she is safe, receiving veterinary care, and getting all the nutrition she needs to raise her healthy family.
“We are so happy to have Mom and babies off the streets in a wonderful foster home. They will soon be up-to-date on all their medical needs and eventually find their forever homes. Every one of them is absolutely precious. Their lives are forever changed for the better,” Deb shared with Cole and Marmalade.
An Octuplet of Adorable Ginger Babies
Kate’s eight kittens are picture-perfect in their foster home. Among them are five ginger girls, an unusually high number. All the kittens inherited the orange gene from both parents. In comparison, male kittens only need to inherit one orange gene, which is why males are more common. But these ginger girls are extra special!

Fun and Challenges in the Foster Home
As you can see, the foster mom is having lots of fun with this all-orange tabby family! But it’s also a challenge to tell who’s who.
“It’s very difficult to do a headcount with this group. They keep moving, and you have to start over since they’re all identical!” the foster mom said.
Thanks to being well-fed, Kate had no trouble keeping the milk bar open 24/7 for her hungry little ones.
