Nature never ceases to amaze us, constantly unveiling wonders that leave us in awe. Even when we fall short in our stewardship of the natural world, nature continues to offer moments of pure magic, often sparking a deeper love for the environment. One such moment occurred during a 2019 expedition in the South Atlantic, led by Belgian photo-tour, expedition guide, and wildlife photographer Yves Adams.
Adams and his team embarked on this journey with hopes of capturing memorable images of the region’s wildlife. However, they were in for an extraordinary surprise—an encounter with a creature so rare that it became the highlight of their expedition. They discovered a yellow penguin, a truly unique sight in the wild, and we’re excited to share the details of this incredible encounter with you.

Adams stumbled upon this unusual penguin by sheer accident. While unpacking equipment on a beach crowded with penguins, something caught his eye. Among the sea of black-and-white birds, one stood out—a penguin with striking yellow plumage. Astonished by the sight, Adams realized he was witnessing something incredibly rare.
“I’d never seen or heard of a yellow penguin before,” Adams remarked. “There were 120,000 birds on that beach, and this was the only yellow one there.”
This extraordinary condition, known as leucism, is a rare genetic mutation that affects an animal’s pigmentation. Unlike albinism, which results in a complete lack of melanin, leucism causes a partial loss of pigmentation, leading to pale or yellow coloring, or even patches of different colors on the body, feathers, or skin. The odds of encountering a leucistic animal range from 1 in 20,000 to 1 in 146,000, making this yellow penguin a statistical marvel in its colony of 120,000 birds.
What makes Adams’ photographs truly special is the clarity with which this rare penguin was captured. This was the first time a yellow penguin had been documented with such precision, and the bird seemed to be quite the willing subject, posing gracefully for the camera.
