There are true heroes in our communities who operate discreetly. They may not wear capes, but they possess the purest hearts. These individuals spare no time or resources to help those in need, expecting nothing in return. Their greatest satisfaction is seeing the smiles on the faces of those they assist.
Our hero for today is a man from Detroit, dressed in an electrician’s uniform. While working at an abandoned house, he noticed a pair of helpless eyes staring at him from the backyard. Sensing something was not right, he immediately sprang into action.
A Selfless Mission
Marc, a DTE electrician, was working near an abandoned house when he spotted two furry faces peering at him. Although initially far away, he decided to step closer. Upon approaching, he saw a bonded pair of puppies sitting in the backyard. One appeared injured, and both were evidently thin and malnourished for their age.
Marc slowly approached them in an attempt to gain their trust. However, both dogs seemed really scared. Despite his desire to help, they kept their distance.
“I normally keep treats on my truck but I ran out… they wanted to trust me but they just weren’t sure,” Marc commented on the Detroit Pit Crew Dog Rescue (DPCDR) post.
Realizing the situation was beyond his immediate capabilities, Marc contacted Detroit Pit Crew Dog Rescue, a non-profit organization specializing in helping injured and sick strays get off the streets. Theresa Sumpter, the organization’s director, responded immediately.
A Timely Rescue
The DPCDR team arrived at the location the same day. Apparently, the dogs were being fed by local kids but had no owner and lived their lives on the street.
“He reported that one of the pups was injured and both were thin. We went to the location and neighbors reported that some kids had been feeding these dogs but that they were strays,” the DPCDR team wrote.
For about half an hour, the pups hesitated, unsure whether to approach Sumpter. Eventually, she won them over with treats. It took patience, sweet talk, and tasty food, but the dogs warmed up to their rescuer.
Recovering Towards a Forever Home
After placing both dogs in a crate, Sumpter took them to the vet hospital for their first checkup. Initially, the dogs, later named Grace and Mercy, were shy and reserved, not knowing what to expect.
Sumpter and her team were patient, understanding it would take time for the dogs to acclimate to their new environment. Having probably spent their whole lives on the streets, Grace and Mercy had little to no socialization with humans.
Then, after two weeks of intense interaction, an amazing transformation occurred. Both Grace and Mercy came out of their shells and started feeling comfortable around humans.
A New Beginning
All it took for these sweet pups to start trusting again was a little bit of love. Now that they are finally capable of living a completely new life in a home, both Grace and Mercy will be available for adoption.
After all the hardship these pups endured, finding a loving family who will show them what life is truly about is something they undoubtedly deserve. We hope that happens soon!
