This is exactly what happened to an adorable 150-day-old koala joey who fell from a tree and was given the most precious tiny cast. Baby Koala Wins Hearts with Her Resilience
Recently, Werribee Open Range Zoo shared some heartwarming photos of the injured koala joey sporting a cast on her tiny arm. The joey had fallen from a tree in a Blue-gum plantation logging area, suffering a fractured arm. Sadly, her mother didn’t survive the fall, leaving the 500-gram (~1 lb) baby orphaned.
Despite the heartbreaking circumstances, the little joey’s story took a turn for the better. Veterinarians at Werribee Zoo were determined to give her a fighting chance, even though her survival seemed uncertain at first.
“It Was Touch and Go”
Vet nurse Jess Rice recalled the moment the tiny joey was brought in for care. “It was really touch and go when she was brought to us,” she said. “At this stage, she would have just started poking her head out of her mum’s pouch. Joeys that size don’t have a good survival rate in care.”
Despite the odds, the veterinary team refused to give up on her. An X-ray revealed the joey had a fractured arm, so the vets carefully placed a tiny cast on her limb and began providing round-the-clock care.
A Remarkable Recovery
Thanks to the dedication and love of the team, the little joey began to regain her strength. Slowly but surely, she put on weight and showed signs of improvement. Once she was stable, she was released to a specialist wildlife carer who would take care of her until she’s old enough to return to the wild.
“It will be more than a year before she’s old enough to be released into the wild,” said Ms. Rice, noting the joey needs ongoing care to ensure a full recovery.
Koalas Facing Extinction Threat
While this tiny koala was fortunate to receive the care she needed, the broader picture for her species is bleak. Koalas are now listed as “vulnerable” on the IUCN Red List due to habitat destruction, climate change, and disease. The loss of their natural habitats due to deforestation and wildfires has put these beloved creatures in grave danger.
