Kylo Ren, a sweet and goofy dog, found himself at the West Memphis Animal Shelter when he was just 10 months old. Despite his loving nature, Kylo had a hard time finding a family. That is, until ALIVE Rescue Memphis pulled him from the shelter, hoping to help him find his forever home.
For a long time, Kylo stayed in a foster home with little interest from potential adopters. No one could understand why this affectionate dog wasn’t generating any attention—until the perfect family finally saw his photo online and knew they had to meet him.
Finding His Forever Family
“We saw his picture on Facebook and reached out,” said Meghan Sweers, Kylo’s new mom, in an interview with The Dodo. “I think he was always meant to wind up with us, it just took some time for us to find him!”
Meghan and her husband already had a little corgi named Nellie, so they arranged for a trial night with Kylo to ensure he and Nellie would get along. A rescue volunteer drove Kylo four hours to their home, and the moment he arrived, it was clear he was meant to be with them.
“As soon as they left, he crawled into my lap, tucked his head under my chin, and started snoring like a chainsaw,” Meghan recalled. “From that moment, my husband and I knew he was staying with us!”
Settling Into His New Home
Kylo had no trouble adjusting to his new life. He instantly fell in love with his family and quickly made himself at home. While he had a few quirks, such as hating hardwood floors, his family made every accommodation for him—including covering their house with rugs so Kylo could move around comfortably.
“He navigates the house by jumping from rug to rug,” Meghan explained.
But what Kylo loves most is simply being held and loved. Every day, without fail, Kylo greets his mom with big hugs and snuggles the moment she comes home from work.
A Daily Routine of Love
Kylo is a true mama’s boy. Every evening, when his dad gets home first and lets Kylo out of his crate, he sits by the front door, waiting patiently for his mom’s return. The moment she walks in, Kylo wastes no time.
“As soon as I sit down to take off my shoes, he climbs into my lap to be held,” Meghan said. “If I don’t sit down for our cuddle time, he follows me around with the saddest, most pathetic look on his face until I give in and hold him.”
If it were up to Kylo, he would spend all day in his mom’s arms, content to just be loved. His gentle nature has even won over people who were once wary of dogs like him.
“Many of our family members who were very prejudiced against bully breeds have changed their tune after spending time around him,” Meghan shared. “He wins people over a bit forcibly… by climbing into their lap and falling asleep.”
Kylo Ren may have had a tough start in life, but now, he’s found a family that adores him. And every day, he makes sure to remind them of just how grateful he is—with a big hug and plenty of snuggles.
