On a chilly, rainy day, NYPD Officer Michael Pascale became a hero in more ways than one when he crossed paths with a little black dog named Joey. While patrolling a public park in his squad car, Officer Pascale couldn’t ignore the heartbreaking sight of Joey—huddled amidst discarded needles and broken beer bottles, tethered to a fence by a heavy chain. Joey was soaked from the rain, shivering, and clearly abandoned.

“I don’t see an animal,” Pascale said. “I see a soul. And that’s not something I can walk away from.”
A New Beginning
As Pascale continued to care for Joey, he texted a picture of the forlorn pup to his wife, who immediately responded, “Bring him home!” The couple was ready to adopt Joey and give him the loving home he deserved. But there was one obstacle in their way.
The shelter informed Pascale that Joey had to go through a mandatory 72-hour stray hold, a waiting period that ensures neglected or mistreated animals have the chance to be reunited with their owners. Although Pascale and his wife were eager to welcome Joey into their family, they understood the importance of this procedure.
The Bond Strengthens
During those long 72 hours, Officer Pascale visited Joey every day at the shelter, strengthening their bond with each visit. Finally, once the stray hold was lifted, Pascale made good on his promise—he adopted Joey and vowed to protect him from cruelty and neglect forever.
Joey’s transformation was complete. From a cold, abandoned dog to a beloved family member, Joey showed his gratitude with joyful kisses. Together, he and Pascale returned home, ready to start a new chapter.
A Happy Life Ahead
Today, Joey enjoys his new life to the fullest. He loves exploring New York City with Officer Pascale and snuggling on the couch with his mom. Although Joey occasionally rummages through the trash and still dislikes going outside in the rain, he’s a content, cherished member of the family.
Officer Pascale proudly notes that Joey has become quite the “Mama’s Boy,” but despite his quirks, it’s clear that Joey has found the loving home he always deserved.
