Jamie Foxx is opening up about the mysterious illness that left him hospitalized last April.
For the first time, the 56-year-old actor shared more details about the health scare in a video posted on X (formerly known as Twitter) by The Art of the Dialogue.
A Sudden Medical Emergency
“Look, April 11th last year,” Foxx recounted while speaking to a group of people at an outdoor café in Phoenix. “Bad headache. I asked my boy for an Advil,” he said, snapping his fingers. “I was gone for 20 days. I don’t remember anything.”
The actor revealed that after asking for simple pain relief, he lost consciousness and was out for nearly three weeks.
Foxx explained that his sister, Deidra Dixon, and daughter, Corinne Foxx, immediately rushed him to a doctor in Atlanta. After receiving a cortisone shot to help alleviate pain and swelling, doctors realized something more serious was happening. “The next doctor said something’s going on up there,” Foxx added, pointing to his head but avoiding further specifics.
Saved by Family
Foxx has previously credited his sister for saving his life during this ordeal. In an emotional Instagram post, he shared: “Without you I would not be here … had you not made the decisions that you made I would’ve lost my life.”
Recovery and Return to the Spotlight
Since his hospitalization, Foxx has made significant strides in his recovery. After missing out on hosting season 6 of “Beat Shazam”, the actor recently returned to the FOX competition show. He’s also teased plans to return to stand-up comedy, where he intends to talk about his health scare in a humorous way. “I got some jokes, and a story to tell,” Foxx said earlier this year.
Reflecting on the Experience
While Foxx hasn’t revealed the exact nature of his medical condition, he has been candid about how the experience deeply affected him. Speaking to his fans in a social media post last summer, he said: “I went through something I thought I would never, ever go through.” He admitted that during his recovery, he chose to keep details private, preferring not to be seen in a vulnerable state with “tubes running out of me, and trying to figure out if I was gonna make it through.”
A Future Revelation
Although Foxx has been careful about the specifics of his health crisis, he has plans to share the full story in his own way. Earlier this year, at the African American Film Critics Association’s Special Achievement Awards, Foxx teased that he would eventually discuss the details of his illness in a filmed special. “Everybody wants to know what happened, and I’m going to tell you what happened. But I’ve gotta do it in my way,” he said, promising a humorous approach when he returns to the stage.
What’s Next for Jamie Foxx?
At the time of his hospitalization, Foxx was filming the Netflix action comedy “Back in Action” with Cameron Diaz in Atlanta. While production on the film continued during his recovery, Foxx’s illness has remained a topic of curiosity for fans worldwide. Foxx has expressed his determination to return to the entertainment world stronger than ever, and his fans eagerly await the day when he shares his story on his terms.
As Foxx continues to recover, his journey serves as a testament to resilience and the importance of family in moments of crisis.
