Recently, I came across a statement that perfectly sums up the experience of rescuing dogs: it’s 50% sadness and 50% relief. This sentiment resonates deeply with those who have encountered abandoned or stray animals, feeling heartbreak at their suffering and an overwhelming desire to help them all.
The other half of the rescue experience is the immense relief when a rescued puppy is finally safe, with a bright future ahead. These moments are priceless, and this article shares one such story where a dog was saved from euthanization and given a second chance by a kind-hearted individual.
A Beagle Who Can’t Contain His Joy
Nowadays, it’s common for many owners to surrender their pets for euthanization due to the high cost of treating their medical problems. This was the case for Gregory, a Beagle who was on the brink of being put down before Joe Kirk came to his rescue.
Joe saved Gregory just two days before his scheduled euthanization. Joe and his wife, Schenley, run a non-profit organization called Hound Rescue and Animal Sanctuary in Findlay, Ohio. Their mission is to help neglected animals find new homes and provide foster care for older, unadoptable dogs.
In a Facebook statement, Schenley shared, “Gregory is one thankful and appreciative Beagle! He KNOWS he is SAFE! He is Heartworm Positive and will be going through treatment, but he knows he is in good hands! We will get him healthy and provide him all the love he so deserves and a wonderful future!”
Gregory’s New Start
Once safe in the care of the Kirks, Gregory received treatment for his heartworm disease. Shortly after his treatment, he was put up for adoption and didn’t have to wait long for a new family.
A family soon came forward, eager to adopt him. Gregory was welcomed into his forever home, where he now enjoys life with his new family and a Beagle sibling.
Schenley beautifully stated, “We are often asked how many dogs we have saved. The answer that always comes to mind is, we have saved one more. One more dog is safe and will have all of the love and respect that they are so deserving of. One more dog will be properly fed and receive needed veterinary care. One more dog will have a loving forever home. There is no better feeling and nothing in life that is more fulfilling.”
A Lesson in Kindness
Gregory’s story teaches us that a little kindness goes a long way. Every act of rescue makes a significant difference, showing that we can always do more to help those in need.
