Rescuing dogs, particularly those in dire circumstances, is often a mix of heartache and hope. Many animal rescuers feel this deeply. Encountering abandoned or stray animals typically evokes profound sadness due to the severity of their neglect, coupled with a strong desire to help them. Yet, there’s considerable relief and joy when a rescue is successful, securing a puppy’s safety and setting the stage for a hopeful future with a new family. In this article, we delve into the touching tale of a dog who narrowly escaped euthanasia and received a new lease on life thanks to the kindness of a dedicated rescuer.
Euthanasia is increasingly becoming a fate for pets primarily due to the steep costs associated with medical care. This was almost the reality for Gregory, a Beagle, who was on the brink of being euthanized before Joe Kirk intervened. With only two days to spare, Joe rescued him, fortuitously running a non-profit named Hound Rescue and Animal Sanctuary in Findlay, Ohio, alongside his wife, Schenley. Their organization is dedicated to rehoming neglected animals and offering foster care to older, often overlooked dogs.
Schenley posted on Facebook, “Gregory is one thankful and appreciative Beagle! He KNOWS he is SAFE!” Despite being diagnosed with Heartworm, the Kirks were prepared to treat him. “He is in good hands! We will get him healthy and provide him all the love he so deserves and a wonderful future!” Schenley affirmed.
After receiving the necessary medical treatment, it didn’t take long for Gregory to find a new home. A family soon stepped forward eager to adopt him, and before long, he was reveling in his forever home, basking in the affection of his new human family and canine siblings. In an interview with Bored Panda, Schenley reflected on the impact of their mission, stating, “We are often asked how many dogs we have saved. The answer that always comes to mind is, we have saved one more. One more dog is safe and will receive all the love and respect that they are so deserving of.”
She added, “One more dog will be well-fed and receive the veterinary care needed. One more dog will find a loving forever home.” For Schenley and Joe, there is no greater reward or more fulfilling accomplishment than ensuring a safe and loving environment for one more dog.
