Several years ago, Lieschen O’Neill casually visited the Lawrence Humane Society in Kansas, intending only to browse. However, as Lieschen would later remark, “nobody goes to the Humane Society just to look.” Her visit took an unexpected turn when she fell in love with a particular dog and decided to bring her home. This dog, whom she named Belle, would soon reveal a surprising characteristic that made her distinctly memorable.
Meet Belle
Belle was about a year old and reaching her adult size when her family started to notice something unusual about her appearance. Initially subtle, it became increasingly apparent that Belle’s eyes had a peculiar, perpetually surprised or shocked expression.

The vet explained that Belle likely experienced complications during birth, possibly being stuck in the birth canal, which affected the development of her facial muscles. This caused her eyes to appear somewhat protruded. Despite this, the vet assured the family that Belle was in good health, although her eyes required occasional treatment with prescription eye drops to manage dryness.

From the moment Lieschen first encountered Belle at the shelter, the connection was immediate. Belle’s energetic and affectionate demeanor was clear from the start as she pressed her face against the kennel door and later leaped into Lieschen’s lap, sealing their bond.
