Her collar suggested that her former owners had abandoned her, likely due to her pregnancy. Without access to adequate food, water, or shelter, she wandered the streets in search of a safe place to deliver.
However, life often defies plans. Labor took her by surprise right there on the street, on a mere piece of cardboard.
Six puppies were born, but tragically, two were stillborn.
Despite her profound fatigue, the mother dog mustered her last ounce of energy to rise and protect her litter when strangers approached. Mistaking their intentions, she reacted fiercely, driven by instinct to shield her pups. She couldn’t comprehend that not all humans meant harm—that some actually intended to help.
The rescue team faced her protective aggression three times before they could safely transport her and her puppies to refuge.
Recovery and Hope at the Shelter
Once at the shelter, the team was relieved to find the mother had sufficient milk for her puppies. Now, it was crucial to nourish the mother herself.
Starving and utterly spent, she needed a substantial meal.
That day, she consumed three meals—twice the normal daily intake for dogs—devouring around five pounds of liver in the first two meals alone, indicative of her dire hunger.
The critical first 48 hours passed, and the puppies began to thrive. They opened their eyes and started to embrace the joys of early life.
The mother was improving, albeit still wary and nervous around humans. Yet, there’s hope she may one day regain her trust in humanity.
